Princeton University

For 1969, GPA estimated from a comparison with 1975 in Axtell (2006).  For 1971-1995, GPA estimated from percent grade awarded, Spring term.  Calibrated to GPA with a formula derived from an internal report of five-year averages of percent grade awarded. For 1996, GPA is estimated from the five-year average data and the Spring data. Accuracy for 1971-1996 estimated to be within 0.02.

For 1997-2000, data are from an internal report and represent averages for the entire academic year. For 2001, GPA estimated from communication with the Dean's office that the mean GPA for undergraduates classes, excluding independent study, for 1997-2001 was 3.36.

For 2002-2008, data are from the Dean's office.  For 2008-2014, data are from internal reports.

Note that it has been reported in a few publications that the mean GPAs for the classes of '73 and '97 were 3.08 and 3.42 respectively. Mean GPAs for classes can be expected to be different than GPAs based on average grade awarded.
